Thinking Nuclear
 A BULLETIN Special Issue

David Douin states in his Executive Director’s Message in the forthcoming winter BULLETIN,

“Innovation in nuclear power is vital to ensure the world’s future energy needs will be met. According to the World Nuclear Association, electricity demand is increasing twice as fast as overall energy use and is likely to rise by more than two-thirds from 2011 to 2035.”

The world needs energy, and with a growing demand for it, several topics come to mind: what is the status of the current fleet of US nuclear reactors; what emerging nuclear energy technologies will change the way our world is powered in the future; and how could inspection activities, codes and standards, and maintenance of nuclear power plants be impacted as innovative technology becomes working reality and as the current fleet of nuclear reactors continue to age?

In this special edition BULLETIN, “Thinking Nuclear,” the following industry experts shed light upon these varying developments in the nuclear power industry.

The Role of Inspection and Standards Education on the Future of Nuclear Power, by Kenneth Balkey

An Overview of Small Modular Reactors (SMR): Diverse Technology for Tomorrow’s Energy, by A. Thomas Roberts

SMR Applications, Safety Features, and Potential ANI Inspection Considerations, by William Bees

Fusion for the Future, by William K. Sowder

ITER Fusion Project: The Way to New Energy, by Krista Dulon

High Density Polyethylene Pipe (HDPE): A Key Innovation for Survival of the Nuclear Industry, by Clayton Smith (with Michael Martin and Pramod Kumar)

How ASME Operation and Maintenance Standards for Nuclear Power Plants Affect Maintenance and Inspection Processes, by John Zudans

This special BULLETIN edition will be available mid-February. A companion issue is planned for the summer 2015 BULLETIN and will include articles by Ryan Crane and Chris Sanna (ASME), A. Thomas Roberts, James R. Chiles, Joseph Ball, and more.
