All of us share the desire for continuous personal and professional growth.
Among the ways I try to accomplish this is by reading. In the spring 2023 edition of the BULLETIN, I discussed Karen Hough’s “Yes” space philosophy from her book “The Improvisational Edge.”
I’d also like to share insights from “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, a book based on ancient Toltec wisdom and offers practical development in all areas of our lives by promoting positive habits and a growth-focused mindset.
These agreements – Be Impeccable with Your Word, Don’t Take Anything Personally, Don’t Make Assumptions, and Always Do Your Best – provide guidance for anyone who wants to improve themselves.
While reading the book, I was struck by how well these principles fit the work of boiler and pressure vessel inspectors, whose roles require precision, diligence, and an unwavering commitment to safety.
Let’s take a look at each agreement and consider how it connects to our profession.
Be Impeccable with Your Word
This agreement calls for honesty, clarity, and a high standard of integrity. For boiler inspectors, these values aren’t just ideals but essential for safety and effective communication. Maintaining strong professional relationships and building trust through transparent, precise communication supports a safer work environment. When inspectors convey their findings consistently and reliably, their assessments are trusted, which is crucial when advising on safety measures.
Don’t Take Anything Personally
Boiler inspections often involve balancing responsibilities and working alongside operators, managers, or other safety personnel who may not always agree with recommendations. The ability to refrain from taking criticism personally is valuable; it allows inspectors to stay objective and focused without being distracted by external pressures or emotional responses. When errors occur, this mindset allows inspectors to view them as learning opportunities instead of setbacks, leading to continuous improvement.
Don’t Make Assumptions

Keeping up motivation and thoroughness under these conditions is crucial. This agreement doesn’t imply flawless work but rather consistent effort. This mentality supports inspectors in tackling each task with resilience and care, helping maintain safety and standards without burnout.
None of this is “rocket surgery” because most of it is common sense. But sometimes, it's necessary to revisit fundamental values to make a real impact. I’ve found that integrating these agreements has helped me grow as both a leader and a person, strengthening my relationships and deepening my integrity.
