Federal Court Dismisses Patent Infringement Claims Against the National Board

Columbus, Ohio — March 18, 2026 — The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI) announced today that the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio has granted NBBI’s motion to dismiss a patent infringement lawsuit brought by CentralSquare Technologies concerning NBBI’s Jurisdictional Reporting System (JRS).

In its March 17, 2026, decision, the Court concluded that the claims asserted under U.S. Patent No. 7,181,304 are directed to an abstract idea and do not contain an inventive concept sufficient to qualify for patent protection. The Court’s decision confirms that the asserted patent does not meet the legal requirements for patent protection. As a result, the Court dismissed the complaint.

“NBBI is pleased with the Court’s decision,” said Joel Amato, Executive Director of NBBI. “We have consistently maintained that our Jurisdictional Reporting System was developed to support our Member Jurisdictions, Authorized Inspection Agencies (AIA's), manufacturers, repair companies, and other stakeholders with modern, effective tools that enhance safety.”

The Jurisdictional Reporting System (JRS) is NBBI’s platform designed to support jurisdictions, Authorized Inspection Agencies (AIAs), and industry participants in managing the registration, inspection, and certification of boilers and pressure vessels. The system streamlines information sharing, improves transparency, and supports more efficient safety workflows across jurisdictions.

“NBBI remains focused on its mission to promote public safety,” said Mark Mooney, Director of Operations. “We are confident in the integrity of our work and in the value that JRS brings to the industry.”

“We remain committed to advancing technology that enables jurisdictions and industry stakeholders to work together more effectively,” said Jacques Couvillon, Director of Product. “JRS reflects our focus on building practical solutions that support the safety of boilers and pressure vessels.”

The Court’s order permits the plaintiff to amend its complaint. NBBI will continue to defend its position and remain confident in the outcome of this matter.
