Summer 2024 Meeting Recap
National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) committee members assembled in person and remotely July 15-18 at The Brown Hotel in Louisville.
During the Subcommittee Repairs and Alterations meeting on July 17, John Siefert of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Hamit Afiyet of LG&E-KU Energy, a utility company in Louisville, co-presented on the use of NBIC Part 3 Welding Method 6, Welding Method 7, and Supplement 8.
Siefert provided perspective on the application of these methods since 2015 throughout the US and the supporting 15 years of EPRI research. Hamit provided a firsthand account of the repairs performed in the LGE-KU fleet since 2020.
Twelve new interpretations of the 2023 NBIC Edition and one from the 2015 NBIC Edition can be found here, along with previous interpretations. In addition, 38 code change proposals were approved.
The NBIC is published every other year. The newest edition was published in July 2023 and is available for purchase, and changes to the 2023 edition can be found here. The public review period for the 2025 NBIC Edition is August 30 through October 14.
Elections were held, and earning positions were George Galanes (chair, Main Committee), Melissa Wadkinson (vice chair, Main Committee), Tom Clark (vice chair, Subgroup Installation), Mark Horbaczewski (chair, Subcommittee Inspection), Darrell Graf (vice chair, Subcommittee Inspection), James Roberts (chair, Subgroup Inspection), Jim Clark (vice chair, Subgroup Inspection), Kathy Moore (chair, Subcommittee Repairs and Alterations), Marty Toth (vice chair, Subcommittee Repairs and Alterations), Trevor Seime (chair, Task Group Historical Boilers), and Tom Dillon (vice chair, Task Group Historical Boilers).
Mike Richards (20 years) and Eddie Wiggins (10 years) were recognized for NBIC committee service.
