Credentials

The National Board offers several credentialing programs to professionals. Individuals who obtain NBBI credentials have met a prescribed amount of training and education, passed a comprehensive exam, and documented the required amount of experience to perform assigned duties as described in the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) and/or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. NBBI credentials directly support the activities of the NBIC and ASME codes.

Certified Individuals

Certified Individuals are employed by an organization who holds a certificate of authorization from ASME and who is authorized to use ASME marks. These individuals are responsible for providing oversight of activities that affect the proper use of ASME marks. There are several certification types currently recognized in National Board’s NB-383, Rules for Certified Individuals. Each supports activities that correspond to specific activities found within select portions of the ASME Code.

Commissioned Inspectors

The National Board issues two types of commissions: the National Board Inservice Inspector Commission (IS) and the National Board Authorized Inspector Commission (AI). The IS Commission is issued to individuals who have been qualified to perform inspections related to installation and inservice of boilers and pressure vessels, and the AI Commission is issued to individuals who have been qualified to perform inspections of boilers and pressure vessels required by the ASME Code.

Pressure Equipment Inspectors

The National Board Pressure Equipment Inspector (PEI) Certification Program is an elective program designed to enhance an individual’s knowledge of inspection processes associated with boilers and pressure vessels. It provides for individuals who perform inspection work to receive credentials and be recognized for their efforts. This certification assists individuals and organizations in improving the quality and safety of pressure equipment by having a better understanding of proven, reliable, and uniform inspection methods.
